Sea Kayak on an Anglesey Beach at sunset

The story so far

Snowdonia Canoe Club’s roots stretch back to the early 70s, and we're excited to uncover more about those early days from former members. What we currently know is that in 1979, Alan Jones and Keith Raine from Cwm Y Glo officially established the club in its current form.

Back then, the Plas Menai National Outdoor Centre was just opening its doors, and their Canoe Pool was available on Monday nights. Our club seized the opportunity to use this pool for practice, and Monday nights quickly became a cherished tradition. Even today, Mondays remain a special night for us, featuring pool sessions during the winter months, and, sea or lake paddles the rest of the year. That’s not all of course. Our calendar is packed with events on various days. At Snowdonia Canoe Club, there's always someone to paddle with and something exciting to do, no matter the weather. If you're new and need gear, no worries, we can lend you everything you need at a minimal cost. Check out our web sections, Just Starting Out, Have Some Skills, or Looking for More to see what we do that matches your stage on the paddling journey.

Kay McManus, our club chair, joined SCC in 2001, and many of our current members have been with us longer still. Today, our club is over 120 strong, with members aged 8 to well over 21! Age really is no barrier. We're passionate about sharing the joy of paddling with everyone, whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned salty sea dog.

To our former members: We’d love to hear more about the club’s early history. If you have any stories, documents, or memories to share, please get in touch. Your contributions are a valuable part of our story, and we’ve mislaid some bits!
